DOE Fueling Energy Innovation; Money Goes to Biofuels

The answer to unlocking our energy future isn’t one “magic bullet,” nor are all the right solutions held by any one organization. The solutions are shared by many parties across multiple geographies, specialties and special interests. You could say that it takes the collective wisdom of many, working in Green Garages large and small, to deliver the breakthroughs we need.

The DOE announcement is devoting $786.5M to “help improve biofuels reliability and overcome key technical challenges, with the goal of creating third-generation biofuels such as renewable gasoline, diesel and jet fuels.” Granted, the EcoCAR Challenge isn’t part of that $786M, but we’d like to think we’re contributing to the bigger picture.

Take just one part of the funding, ethanol research. The stated objectives of optimizing flex-fuel vehicles operating on E85 fuel and evaluating the impact of higher ethanol blends in conventional vehicles are right up our alley. Our teams are using their using their innovative minds and tireless dedication to tackle these same challenges during the EcoCAR competition – all of them using renewable fuels such as ethanol, biodiesel and hydrogen.
So, we’re delighted to be part of the solution – helping to advance all the advanced vehicle technologies and renewable fuels for a more sustainable transportation future! Watch out for our 17 teams, they’ll be making headlines soon too thanks to DOE, GM and others who realize the potential of green garages everywhere.
