As EcoCAR team members left the heat of the desert on Sunday, they took advantage of the beautiful San Diego weather to display all 15 vehicles downtown at Horton Plaza for an educational display and a university administrator ride and drive event.
The day began with a middle school science class from the area who came to learn about EcoCAR 2. The 56 students had just finished learning about energy in their classroom, so it was a perfect opportunity to see an application of energy efficiency in a vehicle design. The middle school students looked at the 15 EcoCAR vehicles up close, talked to team members, and participated in educational activities. The students played trivia games with questions about energy, played with toy jet cars, and learned about different materials used in vehicles by examining them up close.
Later in the day, university administrators, who are here for the week to see the competition and show support for their teams, rode in the vehicles. Many of them commented how smooth the vehicles felt during the ride, and were impressed by the ingenuity that they saw in the architecture of each of the teams. As EcoCAR gears up to announce the Year Two winner on Thursday, students will be hard at work prepping, practicing, and presenting for static events.
