Right before the holiday break, the Hybrid Electric Vehicle Team (HEVT) of Virginia Tech received an early holiday present—a modified rear subframe. Mechanical Designs of Virginia (MDV), located in Stuart, Va., graciously donated their time and resources to modify the subframe.
Due to the addition of a rear electric motor and transmission in HEVT’s Chevy Malibu, it was necessary to alter the rear subframe. The subframe needed to allow for the space requirement of these two powertrain components and in addition needed to handle the added mass and reaction torque.
“Mechanical Designs of Virginia not only finished the job quicker than expected,” said mechanical subteam leader Taylor Ashworth, ”but they also were in constant contact with us throughout the build process to ensure our exact designs were being constructed.”
The cuts and welds of the subframe were exceptional and helped the team get one step closer to having a running vehicle by spring break (March 9). HEVT would like to thank everyone at MDV for their extreme generosity – the team looks forward to working with you in the future!
