Happy Earth Week, once again, from EcoCAR 2! Let’s find out how some of the EcoCAR 2 teams celebrated the 43rd anniversary of Earth Day this past week.
The Mississippi State EcoCAR 2 team has a poster display and information along with the EcoCAR represented at the Infinity Science Center (Part of the NASA Stennis Space Center) in Bay St. Louis, MS. Earth Day is one of the busiest days for the center. Two elementary school classes and one middle school class visited the center along with other non-scheduled groups. They received materials about EcoCAR 2 and hybrids and viewed the poster and the EcoCAR vehicle. MSU was excited to have this opportunity to be represented in front of such a large attendance at a great facility.
Rose-Hulman EcoCAR 2 attended Indiana State University’s Earth Day Celebration. This event was also attended by Terre Haute Mayor, Duke Bennett, and Indiana State University’s President, Dan Bradley. All day, the team interacted with their peers and other numerous local eco-friendly organizations. They were given the chance to participate in eco-friendly T-shirt Tie-dying, games of corn hole and even rock wall climbing. The RHIT EcoCAR 2 team was given the opportunity to share the values of EcoCAR 2 and sustainability with the entire Terre Haute community. Above all, the team reminded every individual that Earth Day is every day!
The Wayne State EcoCAR 2 team partnered with WSU’s Office of Sustainability and Detroit Area Clean Cities to celebrate sustainable transportation in honor of Earth Day. All week the office of sustainability stationed events across campus to focus on different aspects of sustainability. Clean Cities was able to put a Chevy Volt on display. Flyers were handed out that featured myths commonly associated with hybrid vehicles and facts on the other side to prove the myths wrong. Even though there are many ways to celebrate the planet, the team was pleased to organize a day that focused solely on sustainable transportation.
NC State University hosted a campus-wide celebration of Earth Day. Many vendors were present, and the NCSU EcoCAR 2 team added to the campus-wide event by informing the students, faculty, staff and fellow venders of its project to convert an ICE to a PHEV. When a visitor stopped by the table to learn more, team members promised them a chance to win one of our new t-shirts! Four winners were chosen on Monday and the winners were very excited to represent NCSU’s EcoCAR 2 team through their new attire!
Virginia Tech celebrated Earth Day with an action-packed full day of events. In the morning HEVT attended the annual Fishburn Elementary Earth Week celebration. The students learned about EcoCAR and HEVT through a short presentation and afterwards played with the solar cars and saw VT’s EcoCAR1 vehicle. In the afternoon HEVT set up alongside Virginia Clean Cities on the Virginia Tech drillfield for their own Alternative Fuel Vehicle display. Virginia Tech’s vehicle was in attendance along with a Chevy Volt and VCC’s propane vehicle. HEVT capped off the day with a visit from State Senator Philip Puckett who visited the Ware Lab, where VT’s vehicle is being reengineered.
Finally, the Purdue Ecomakers participated in the Purdue Earth Day Carnival put on by the University’s Sustainability program. Team members were able to communicate the EcoCAR 2 initiative and inform visitors of the current state of their car.
