Penn State Celebrates National Plug In Day

Customers couldn’t help but stare at as they visited their local Best Buy one Sunday afternoon as Penn State’s EcoCAR 2 team was hard at work raising awareness of hybrids and advanced vehicles at National Plug In Day in State College, PA.

National Plug In Day is a time to celebrate and draw attention to the economic, environmental and other benefits of plug-in electric vehicles through various events planned around the country. More than 25,000 people attended events in 65 cities across the United States. At these events, there were more than 1,500 electric vehicles on display, and more than 1,600 people took test-drives. In State College, Penn State’s team celebrated by hosting a showcase of its reengineered vehicles and the Chevrolet Volt.

As people stopped to take pictures of the HEVs, it was obvious that many of them had never seen a hybrid before. Team members greeted community members with cheerful smiles and gave them important information about National Plug In Day and EcoCAR’s mission to promote vehicles that are environmentally friendly without sacrificing performance and customer acceptability.

As people took a closer look at the vehicles, the student engineers answered any additional questions about their miles per gallon equivalent, batteries and recharging. After receiving free EcoCAR 2 t-shirts and pens, many left with a new perspective of the efficient vehicles and a new-found appreciation for going green.
