The Hybrid Electric Vehicle Team (HEVT) is a group of engineering students from Virginia Tech working together towards a more sustainable future. HEVT has been participating in Advanced Vehicle Technology Competitions (AVTCs) since 1995 and is excited to continue its participation in AVTCs with EcoCAR 2: Plugging In To the Future.
The architecture HEVT has selected for its 2013 Chevy Malibu is a series-parallel plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), similar to the Chevy Volt. The series-parallel PHEV operates with an engine, two electric motors and a high voltage battery system, which allows for the best possible efficiency and a lower impact to the environment. The HEVT vehicle will use both grid electricity and E85 ethanol as energy sources. It will have the ability to operate in all-electric mode on the battery pack and also automatically switch to the engine when the battery runs low on charge, thus extending the range of the vehicle.
