On Sunday, November 27, the University of Washington EcoCAR 2 team participated in the Victory Recovery Area expo at the Seattle Marathon finish line. This was the team’s first large scale outreach event.
The Seattle Marathon has been held for ten years and has steadily increased in attendance. It was estimated that 17,000 runners and walkers participated in the full and half marathon this year. Every racer and his or her family and friends had the opportunity to pass through the Victory Recovery Area expo, where they found refreshments, food, medical care, a commemorative medal and race results.
Given the nature of the event and Seattleites in general, the team felt that this crowd would be interested in environmental issues, and the exposure exceeded their expectations! The EcoCAR 2 booth was positioned in the main hall amongst vendors like Talking Rain, Jamba Juice, the UW Medical Center, Dole, and other prominent companies. We spoke with hundreds of participants and their guests. In fact, Katherine Long, the reporter that wrote a Seattle Times article on EcoCAR 2 ran the half marathon and found the team there!
UW EcoCAR 2 distributed over 250 branded water bottles and information cards with the goal of driving traffic to their website. It turned out that they totally underestimated the reception they would receive: The team wished it had brought twice as many water bottles! People love free stuff.
