Written by: Marla Baker, UWAFT Team Member

The University of Waterloo, located in Waterloo, Ontario, has the largest faculty of engineering in Canada and has been awarded the title of most innovative university for the last 23 years.

The University of Waterloo Alternative Fuels Team (UWAFT) has a rich heritage spanning 18 years of innovation in Advanced Vehicle Technology Competitions and are honored to be one of two Canadian teams competing in EcoCAR 3. UWAFT enjoys competing in AVTCs as they foster the students’ transition from classroom to career. Team members benefit from personal development as well as gaining firsthand experience within their desired field.

Working with the competition vehicle, our engineers have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and learn all of the complex systems that go into the design and construction of a vehicle. UWAFT has talented computer programmers that develop software to improve support processes which are then integrated within the vehicle. The business and communication members take on management roles, leading a dynamic team of peers.

The EcoCAR 3 competition provides an engaging platform for the team to strive for higher levels of innovation and creativity. Our goal is to increase fuel efficiency without sacrificing performance. UWAFT is actively developing and challenging the future of automotive and sustainable technology.
