EcoCAR 2 would like to announce two new competition-level sponsors: the Transportation Research Center and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The Transportation Research Center (TRC) is a transportation proving ground supporting the automotive industry. Located in Marysville, Ohio, the company specializes in R&D testing as well as testing to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and industry certification and compliance standards. Testing for safety, fuel economy, emissions, durability and performance are accomplished at the 4,500-acre facility, which includes: 7.5-mile test track, crash testing facility, 24″ HYGE Sled, Static Fixture Labs, emissions laboratory, 50-acre Vehicle Dynamics Area, 9,000-foot skid pad, off-highway area and ride quality roads. TRC Inc. is an ISO 9001 and 14001 registered company.
TRC will be providing the facilities, resources and expertise to support the EcoCAR 2 Year Three emissions testing event! More details are to come, but all competition vehicles will be allowed several hours of testing time on a 2 or 4-wheel-drive chassis dynamometer with full emissions measurement capability. This event will ultimately give teams vital testing time in a controlled environment to provide valuable data for vehicle control strategy calibration and improvement as well as for EcoCAR student theses and dissertations. The EPA Office of Transportation and Air Quality’s (OTAQ) mission is to reconcile the transportation sector with the environment by advancing clean fuels and technology and working to promote more livable communities. OTAQ is responsible for carrying out laws to control air pollution from motor vehicles, engines and their fuels. Mobile sources include cars and light trucks, large trucks and buses, farm and construction equipment, lawn and garden equipment, marine engines, aircraft and locomotives. The EPA’s National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory (NVFEL) is part of OTAQ. Established in 1971 shortly after the creation of EPA, NVFEL is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and has about 400 employees with staff expertise spanning a variety of technical and public policy fields. The NVFEL provides emission testing services for motor vehicle, heavy-duty engine and non-road engine programs in support of U.S. EPA-OTAQ rulemakings, enforcement actions and procedures development. Testing activities include certifying that vehicles and engines meet federal emissions and fuel economy standards, testing vehicles and engines for in-use compliance and analyzing fuels, fuel additives and exhaust compounds.
EPA will be providing high-accuracy emissions measurement equipment in support of the Emissions and Energy consumption events this year at GM’s Desert Proving Ground-Yuma and next year at the Milford Proving Ground. Without EPA’s support and expertise, the execution of our emissions testing event would not be possible! For more information, visit www.epa.gov.
Please help us in welcoming both organizations as sponsors of the EcoCAR 2 program!
