One of the students behind the University of Victoria’s participation in advanced vehicle technology competitions (AVTCs) is Jeremy Wise. In 2008, Wise and UVic professor Dr. Dong decided that they would apply to EcoCAR:The NeXt Challenge. Building a team would create an opportunity for UVic engineering students to get some invaluable training.
“I wrote the majority of the proposal back in March 2008. We only had about 10 days to do so, and we were starting from scratch,” Wise said.
The two managed to finish the proposal in time and a couple months later the UVic EcoCAR team was born. Wise served as team leader from 2008 to 2009, where he was able to learn a lot about vehicle modeling real-time controls, HIL and rapid prototyping.
“I learned almost everything I know now about hybrid vehicles. Being in the position as team leader was unique because you have the opportunity to see every part of the project unfold,” he said.
After leaving UVic, Wise was hired in 2010 by GM. He was part of the first batch of EcoCAR alumni to be hired as GM employees. He attributes his success and career to the AVTC program.
“EcoCAR provides extensive interaction with industry companies and their tools. The amount of support provided is unprecedented.”
We wish Jeremy the best of luck in his career at GM!
