After months of planning, EcoCAR 2 successfully wrapped up the Year Two Winter Workshop in Austin, Texas.
Co-sponsored by Freescale and dSPACE, Inc., this year’s five day workshop featured multi-track training sessions and office hours from competition sponsors, including General Motors, the U.S. Department of Energy, dSPACE Inc., Freescale, AVL, Magna, CD-adapco, GKN Driveline, QNX, and more. These sessions were crucial in preparing students for the Year Two Competition which will take place in May 2013.
In addition to the technical training sessions, communications managers and business managers each had their own dedicated tracks, in which they learned about the remaining deliverables for the year and attended professional development sessions, including leadership training, a PR Panel, and project management training from EarthPM. Communication Managers had the opportunity to refine their youth presentations skills by visiting Covington Middle School and Murchison Middle School in Austin during Outreach Day, where they presented to more than 75 students in 7th and 8th grades.
Teams also presented the first in-person scored deliverables of the year, including a Sponsorship Pitch and Table Top Display and a Modeling & Simulation presentation. While winners won’t be announced until May, sponsors and organizers were impressed with the level of professionalism and detail from teams and are excited to see the final results at competition!
To blow off some steam in the evenings, teams attended several social events, including a Welcome Night at Abel’s on the Lake and a Saturday evening event at Maggie Mae’s on Sixth Street. Teams were able to ‘rock out’ with the band LC Rocks, and Argonne’s own Patrick Walsh impressed the teams with his guitar skills by playing a song or two with the band. Students also attended a Sponsor Social Networking and Recruiting event with more than 15 sponsors in attendance!
To end the Winter Workshop, students received a special treat by visiting the new Circuit of the Americas (COTA) Formula 1™ U.S. Grand Prix track on Sunday! Not only did teams get to learn about AVL DRIVE Quality and Emissions & Energy Consumption through vehicle demonstrations, they were able to take a tour of COTA and hear from industry members in sustainable racing.
EcoCAR would like to thank all of the teams and sponsors for attending the Winter Workshop and would like to give a special thank you to co-sponsors Freescale and dSPACE, Inc.
